Best buddy ever…. At almost thirteen Ren is basically retired and has made it clear that he is quite happy spending his retirement chasing the occasional frisbee, hiking, playing with his buddy Jet, being dragged along on trail runs, and epic amounts of lounging.
He has been at my side for all but the first seven weeks of those thirteen years and has been through the good times and the bad. We’ve moved a lot, traveled a lot, and had a major life makeover together.
Ren was a fabulous agility partner, a big, powerful jumper, turning was not his strong suit, but he had tons of ground speed and always gave me his best. His career unfortunately had a lot of stops and starts due to life circumstances and medical issues along the way. In 2012 Ren had to have surgery for a bone chip in his elbow. Not long after his surgery I started to notice strange little things in his behavior and realized that he was losing his hearing. By the next year it was virtually gone. We went back to competing after re-learning how to run together and had a few more fun and really competitive years together.
He was also a great herding dog with a couple HITs under his belt. Now he indulges me with a bit of nose work and is getting ready to earn his NW1 title. Best of all he is a big, giant teddy bear.
